Spring 2012 – Director’s Notes – Remembering Don Busarow

IN MEMORIUM

Dr. Donald Busarow, the founding director of The Detroit Lutheran Singers in 1967, entered Life Eternal on October 24, 2011. Dr. Busarow served both Bethany and Outer Drive Faith Lutheran churches as Minister of Music during his sixteen years in Detroit. From 1975 until his retirement in May 2011, he was on the music faculty of Wittenberg University; teaching theory and composition, directing the Chapel Choir, and serving as University organist. Dr. Busarow, son of a Lithuanian-born father and a Russian-born mother, was deeply interested in the music of the Orthodox Church.  This influence can be heard in three of his compositions, especially in those associated with former DLS Business Manager Paul Joseph, who shared his love for the “Russian sound.”  The anthems “Peace,”  “We Are the Lord’s,” and “Adorn Thyself,” are our memorial tribute to Dr. Donald Busarow.
